Science
Philosophy: Science is a tool we have to assist us in two primary areas. The first is to learn more about the Creator, Himself (see Romans 1:20). The second is to improve our present human condition which includes both the environment and the human body (Genesis 1:28). The science department strives to provide a hands-on learning environment where students can develop and use logical thought processes to better understand how they can be successful in these two areas (see Proverbs 22:6).
| Courses Offered: | Description |
| Physical Science: |
This course takes a hands-on approach to the
physical world in which we live. Students will explore meteorology, oceanography,
chemistry, geology, and physics. Basic lab techniques are emphasized along with
scientific reasoning. As students learn more about the world God created, they
will develop a better understanding of how it works. Grade 9 |
| Biology: | Biology is
the study of life using the Scientific Method. In this class we will
explore how life functions at both the cellular level and the systemic levels. In addition to studying life, we will explore
life's origins. We learn Biblical Creation and
evolution. We apply the scientific evidence
available (See Job12:7-10). We also discuss the dangers of theistic
evolution. Origins discussions are necessary in this society. Based
on 1 Peter 3:15, we have a responsibility to be prepared to have an answer for
the hope we have. Many people believe in the evolutionary process which
can be an opportunity to witness. 2 Corinthians 2:11 states that we need
to be aware that this discussion matters, because it is a tool the devil uses to
erode the faith of many. Above all biology is used to help strengthen the
faith of our students. Science and biology are to be used to learn about
God and His mighty power and glory (Romans 1:20) as well as be good stewards of
creation (Genesis 1:28). Grade 9/10 |
| Chemistry: | This course delves into the chemical world God has created and explores the
relationship between different kinds of substances. Laboratory experiences
give firsthand knowledge and allow students to manipulate many lab apparatuses.
It encourages students to analyze, to question, and to reason with the end
result being the development of a chemistry literacy that gives students the
power to make informed decisions on issues that directly affect them and world. Grade 10/11 |
| Ecology: |
Ecology
is the study of organisms in their environment. In this class we want to
explore life and its balance on Earth, and in our backyard. God has given
us the responsibility to be good stewards of Creation, Genesis 1:28.
Renewable energies is an emphasis in the class. As of 2006, we have
added solar panels to the school & added a 17+ acre school forest. In
2007 we added an electric vehicle, 1989 Ford Ranger pickup. The class hopes to
be functional - very "hands on". As we
explore life in all its systems, we hope to gain a greater sense of God's
greatness, see Romans 1:20 and Ecclesiastes 11:5.
Grade 11/12 |
| Advanced Biology: |
Advanced
Biology is a college prep. class. This is an A.P. class without all the
labs. The class is challenging! In addition to the class content,
the students will do numerous research projects as well as read two
different novels, one per semester. We take several fieldtrips to
enhance the reality of what is accomplished in the classroom and to
enhance the educational experience. This class prepares students for the next
step. Critical reading and evaluation of material is an essential skill
that the class also develops. Advanced Biology takes an id depth
look at cell anatomy and physiology, genetics, human body systems and
origins. The goals of the class include: being successful in a
content driven class at the next level, critically evaluate research
and other written material, have fun, and strengthen the faith of the
students (Job 12:7-10). Grade 12 |
| Physics: | This class studies world in classroom and lab activities. It demonstrates
theory in specific applications. Topics include forces, motion, momentum, work
energy, wave, sound, light, electricity, and magnetism. Grade 11/12 |
