Foreign Language

Philosophy: In a nation of cultural diversity and international activity, the need to communicate for spiritual and commercial reasons increases.  The study of another language gives a student the opportunity to develop sensitivity to the culture of others, which enables the student to live more fully a life of Christian citizenship in a changing global society.

Spanish

Two Semesters
Text: Bravo (McDougal, Littell, Houghton Mifflin)

This class develops a basic vocabulary, sentence structure, and verbal communications.
Spanish students begin to acquire a listening understanding of basic questions and responses dealing with personal, weather, health, and time information.  Immediate immersion into the Spanish language continues as students repeat and learn basic vocabulary and phrases.  Correct oral pronunciation begins the first day and continues throughout the year.  Students develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills as they learn appropriate greetings, description of items, and cultural information.  A variety of short, culturally interesting readings aid in expanding vocabulary as well as aid in providing opportunities to learn elementary aspects of grammar.  Present tense verbs, sentence structure, and adjective agreement are emphasized in oral and in written materials.
Students play games to drill on grammar and on cultural facts.  They see videos to learn more about Spanish-speaking countries as well as to hear Spanish spoken by various speakers.  Audio tapes enable students to hear more examples of native speakers.
