Art Course Outline, Policies & Descriptions
Mission: To provide students with skills and knowledge with which to express themselves and better understand the contemporary environment they experience daily.

Classroom Policies & Guidelines:

Grading:
Students are graded according to criteria set up for each assignment. Planning, Effort, Craftsmanship, Medium Use, Composition, and Subject Matter are common criteria for project or skill-based assignments. More creative assignments may have criteria such as meeting stated goals, communicating ideas, creativity. Students are given feedback as they work, expected to self-evaluate assignments, and offered feedback after work is graded. Students can then use opportunities to re-work, re-do, or repair a design, if they choose.

Late Work Policy:
Projects:
Due dates are given for projects/assignments and work is expected to be completed by those dates. If work is late it will have 1 point/day subtracted. If work is not turned in, students cannot receive points for that project.
Sketchbook Assignments:
All classroom sketchbook assignments are given a week in advance and are worth 20 points. These assignments are to be completed solely outside of the classroom, unless the student has completed the current project early. Late sketchbook assignments will only be eligible to receive half credit back (10 out of 20) when turned in.

Art Fee:
There is a fee for each semester of art a student takes. The art fee usually consists of a $10/semester. This fee covers costs for art materials such as paper, utensils, paint, clay, etc. and is subject to change.

Academic Integrity:
Students are expected to design, plan, create, & turn in work that only they have created. Work
should be completed in the classroom. Respect for the work of others is also expected.

Rules:
-       Art materials should be used as intended.
-       Be good stewards of the time, abilities, materials, & relationships with which you have been blessed.
-       Respect all other artists and their work.
-       Each project will have specifications for clean-up. Students should leave art materials and classroom areas in as good or better condition than when they started using them.

Instructor Contact:
The best way to contact Ms. Griffin is through email – griffinl@newlhs.com. Please include information about how/when you can be reached for further questions. The school phone number is 920-469-6810, if you would prefer to leave a message with our school office staff I will get back to you as soon as possible. Ms. Griffin is often at school early in the morning prior to the start of the school day.

Introduction to Art Course:  2 Semesters (1 fall/1 spring)

This course is designed to teach students the basics as it applies to the elements and principles of design. This class is intended to give students an introductory look at the elements and principles of design as it relates to both 2-D & 3-D media as well as self-expression. The course will also encompass numerous different mediums including charcoal, pastels, acrylic paint, clay, & many others.
Each element and medium will be explored as it aligns with other course and experiential learning activities with the student’s school experience. Projects will often be paired with lessons or a basis in art history to give students a more well-rounded knowledge of art and its application to history and the world around them. Students in Introduction to Art will also be required to work in a portable sketchbook throughout the school year to develop their creative and imaginative skills.

Advanced Art students are required to complete sketchbook assignments within the same parameters as introductory students.

Independent Art:  1-2 semesters (grade 12 only with teacher approval)
When students have proven a dedication to their art/craftsmanship and the art program they will be afforded the opportunity to work in a more independent setting, in which the projects they create will be of their own design and qualifications. The artwork created should further the completion of their high school portfolio. Students in independent art will be required to complete a substantial effort in a single medium, a self-narrative work, a researched work, & an historical art essay within the course of each semester.
